Okay I have allot to say on this game but I will mostly focus on something I have allot of knowledge on. Also I know of some great videos that will help with this game. My main focus is on helping you guys just starting in arma and dayz with land navigation.
Here is a video on how to use a compass, I know some of you think you know how to use a compass but its more complicated than you think, and in a game like dayz knowing how to use one is key to finding all the best places.
So I know your thinking that this video is not a dayz video so how does this help. Well in Arma which is were the dayz engine came from they made the land nav parts of the game very realistic. The terrain is based on a real place and the distances are real also the compass in game works in a very real way. So when you are traveling with a compass and you know which direction you need to go just plot your bearing pick a target, a tree, building or other unchanging land mark. Then put away your compass take out your gun and start running to that target. Once you get to said target check your bearing pick a new target and start running again. Rinse, lather and repeat.
P.S. The guy in the vid is the same guy that used to star in a show called dual survivor on discovery.

In this one are some tips about land nav like how to use a hand rail. Now here I will post a link to a map for you guys. When you are using a map for nav purposes always use a topographical map. This way you can see the elevations of the terrain properly. The reason this is important is that you can use cuts, draws and ridges to help you navigate the map. How you read the terrain and its elevation is by observing the brown lines. These will always tell you elevation. The thick brown lines will always have their elevation marked some were on them. From there you can determine the elevation of the thin lines by adding or subtracting 10 meters for each small line. hydra-images.cursecdn.com/dayz.gamepedia.com/Gmap/beta/gmap.htmlAlso remember that all man made object will usually be grey or black.

Last thing I have is how to determine were you are without the use of road singes. To do this you will need a map and a compass or some other way of accurately determining your bearing to a land mark. First you need to get to high ground, a mountain or hill top is best cause you may be there for a bit. Second you need to find a easily recognizable land mark, like a road or building is the best in this case. Third you need another land mark also easy to recognize. Now find your two land marks on the map. Then once you are sure you know were they are on the map plot your bearing with the compass to the two land marks. The more accurate the bearing the better. Lastly subtract the bearing by 180 degrees if it is more than 180 or add 180 if it is less than 180. Basically you are getting the objects bearing to you. Now draw two imaginary lines from each landmark in direction of your two numbers these two lines should intersect. This intersection is were you are. This is what is called triangulation, for a more accurate location use more land marks.

By the way on the compass the inside numbers should be the degrees which is what you need. The outside numbers should be mils which are used more for artillery which you shouldn't need.

sure you can as soon as I can find the parts for an mlrs in dayz. I think you can make one out of tin cans and spit.
